JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - A Missouri House committee has signaled that it might not fund a new grant program for high school students who score well on college-level math and science exams.
Gov. Jay Nixon's proposed budget includes $1 million to fund one-time, $500 grants to high school seniors who score a three or higher on at least two Advanced Placement exams in math or science.
The students would have to eligible for aid from the Access Missouri or A+ scholarship programs to get the grants.
But there's no money for the program in a proposed higher education budget released Monday by the Missouri House Budget Committee.
Education officials support Nixon's proposal, saying the grants will encourage more students to take the tests and score better.
