Mosquitoes in St. Louis Co. positive for West Nile

June 24th, 2011 in News

CLAYTON, Mo. (AP) - St. Louis County health officials have discovered mosquitoes in several parts of the county carrying West Nile Virus.

The county health department said Thursday that mosquitoes with West Nile have been found in communities ranging from Lemay in the southern part of the county to Florissant in the north. No human cases have been reported.

Health director Dolores Gunn says preventative measures can reduce human contact with mosquitoes, such as draining water from garbage cans, buckets, toys, flower pots, wading pools and pet dishes.

West Nile first showed up in Missouri in 2002. About two dozen Missourians have died from the virus since then.
