Two policemen injured in pursuit

Two Jefferson City police officers were injured while trying to apprehend a person Thursday afternoon.

According to police reports, an officer on a motorcycle was trying to stop a 2005 Dodge Neon for speeding near West Edgewood and Missouri 179 around 12:50 p.m.

The suspect did pull over, but the suspect then put his vehicle into reverse and struck the officer as he was getting off his motorcycle.

The pursuit continued with other officers following the suspect as he got on to Fairgrounds Road and went south out of the city limits into Cole County.

The chase went onto South Country Club Drive to Old Lohman Road and eventually into the Westview Heights area.

The suspect got out of his vehicle and fled on foot. A police officer pursued the subject on foot as he ran through several backyards and over fences.

Around 1 p.m., a resident in the 1300 block of Westview Drive told authorities the suspect was in the rear of a residence.

The officer was able to catch the suspect, and the suspect fought the officer as he attempted to gain control of police equipment.

The suspect was eventually taken into custody with the assistance of Cole County Sheriff's Department deputies and members of the Missouri Highway Patrol.

The two officers injured in the chase were taken to a local hospital for evaluation as was the suspect, who was later taken to the Cole County Jail.

Authorities believe the suspect to be 30 and from the state of Florida.

The suspect's name was not released because formal charges had not been filed as of Thursday evening, but authorities said the suspect is facing possible charges of first-degree assault, assault on a law officer and resisting arrest.
