Talk about a getting a second nuclear plant to meet the needs of Mid-Missourians in the future has gathered a lot of attention the past year. But a new power plant in Oklahoma will soon be bringing energy to some local electric co-op members.
Chouteau 2, a 540-megawatt, combined-cycle natural gas unit in Pryor, Okla., was declared ready for commercial operation this week. It will help serve the power needs of Co-Mo Electric Cooperative members, co-op officials say.
Associated Electric Cooperative, which generates power for all of Missouri's electric cooperatives, built the plant. According to Co-Mo officials, the low-emissions power plant was completed on time and $70 million under budget.
