Monday's NCAA Tournament Capsules

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Evan Marzilli drove in two runs and closer Matt Price got the final eight outs as defending national champion South Carolina beat Stetson 8-2 Monday to win the Columbia Regional.

Marzilli led off the game with a homer and made it 2-1 in the third on a sacrifice fly that brought in Robert Beary, who opened the inning with a triple. Beary added an RBI single in the fourth for South Carolina (48-14).

The Hatters' (43-20) best chance to rally came in the seventh when they loaded the bases with one out while trailing 4-1. That's when Price got the call and shut down Stetson, getting Ben Carhart on a fly ball and Nick Rickles on a grounder to second. Price earned his 17th save of the season and second of the regional.

Tallahassee Regional

Florida St. 11, Alabama 1

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Scott Sitz pitched four scoreless innings and Florida State advanced to the super regionals for the fourth straight year.

The game was completed after being halted in the sixth inning Sunday night because of rain and lightning with the Seminoles leading 8-1.

When the game resumed, Sitz took over and posted his first save of the season. Florida State (45-17) will host a super regional against the Texas A&M-Arizona winner.

Mike McGee (4-3) allowed only two hits through five innings before Taylor Dugas homered to lead off the sixth for the Crimson Tide (35-28). The game was halted shortly thereafter.

McGee hit three doubles, Jayce Boyd homered and doubled, and regional MVP James Ramsey had three of Florida State's season-high 19 hits.

Austin Regional

Texas 5, Kent State 0

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Texas used six pitchers and smart baserunning to win the NCAA Austin Regional. The Longhorns (47-16) will host Arizona State in a three-game series in Austin beginning Friday.

Texas got its offense going in the bottom of the first when Tant Shepherd led off with a double and came around to score on a throwing error to give Texas a 1-0 lead. The Longhorns added runs in the third, sixth, seventh and eighth innings.

Kendal Carrillo (6-1) pitched 1 1-3 innings for the win after starter Sam Stafford struck out five in 3 2-3 innings.

Ryan Mace (5-3) allowed three runs and six hits in 5 1-3 innings for Kent State (45-17).

Clemson Regional

Connecticut 14, Clemson 1

CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) - Greg Nappo pitched 5 2-3 strong innings and Ryan Fuller hit a three-run homer and drove in five runs as Connecticut won the Clemson Regional.

Nappo (10-2) gave up only one run and five hits, and leadoff hitter LJ Mazzilli had two hits and scored three runs for the Huskies (45-18-1), who will play at South Carolina in this weekend's super regionals.

Tigers starter Kevin Pohle (5-2) was knocked out after getting only one out. Ryan Fuller homered for Clemson (43-20).

It was an especially big night for UConn. Outfielder George Springer and pitcher Matt Barnes were taken in the first round of the Major League draft.

Fort Worth Regional

Dallas Baptist 11, Oral Roberts 9

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) - Dallas Baptist batted around during an eight-run first inning and went on to hold off Oral Roberts to win the NCAA Fort Worth Regional.

The Patriots (42-18), in their sixth season as an NCAA Division I independent, advanced to their first super regional.

Ryan Behmanesh had three hits, including two doubles, and two RBIs for Dallas Baptist, which sent 11 batters to the plate in the first inning. Jason Krizan, Behmanesh, Kenny Hatcher, Austin Elkins, Josh Wilson, Tyler Robbins and Landon Anderson all had run-scoring hits.

Oral Roberts put the tying run on second in the eighth with the heart of its order coming up, but closer Chris Haney struck out Chris Elder and Brandon King to end it.

King had a grand slam and Edler drove in three runs for the Golden Eagles (39-22).

Houston Regional

California 9, Baylor 8

HOUSTON (AP) - Devon Rodriguez singled in two runs with two outs to cap a four-run rally in the bottom of the ninth inning and give California a 9-8 victory against Baylor that sends the Bears from the Pac-10 to the NCAA super regionals.

After Baylor padded its lead with a run in the top of the ninth, Michael Theofanotouo drove in a run with a ground out for Cal and Tony Renda cut it to 8-7 with an RBI single.

Rodriguez finished 3 for 4 with four RBIs.

California advances to face Dallas Baptist in the super regionals.

Matt Flemer (4-2) got the win in relief and Logan Verrett (7-6) gave up four runs in the ninth to take the loss.
