Police say teen's shooting death accidental

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Kansas City police say the shooting death of a 16-year-old boy over the weekend appears to have been an accident.

The Kansas City Star reports a preliminary investigation into the death of Marlin Garrett indicates he was accidentally shot by a 14-year-old friend.

Police say the two and the victim's twin brother were playing with a weapon that accidentally discharged and struck Marlin Garrett on Sunday afternoon.

The teenager was already dead by the time police arrived at the home.

Relatives said they were unsure what had happened. The boy's mom had gone to the store and found her son in a bedroom with a gunshot wound when she returned.

The case file has been turned over to the prosecutor's office for review.
