1 Joplin school determined to not be a total loss

JOPLIN, Mo. (AP) - Finally some good news for the Joplin School District.

School officials say one of the elementary schools thought to be a total loss after the May 22 tornado is structurally sound.

Superintendent C.J. Huff says an engineer and insurance carrier determined that Emerson Elementary School could be used again.

The tornado destroyed Joplin High School, Franklin Technology Center and Irving Elementary Schools. It damaged five other schools and the administration building.

Huff told The Joplin News that the district is considering options for a temporary high school, including talking with retailers about warehouse space.

The district will hold summer school, beginning June 13. Huff says it's important to give families and students some routine and relief from tornado recovery efforts.
