A Kansas City, Mo., company will get $300,000 to train workers to clean up hazardous waste sites.
The Environmental Protection Agency's regional office in Kansas City, Kan., said in a statement Thursday that grant will go to the Metropolitan Energy Center under the agency's brownfield program.
The EPA said MEC, a workforce development organization, will use the money to train people to clean up and manage brownfield sites, which are contaminated industrial and commercial sites.
The agency also said the MEC program will recruit students from high unemployment and underemployment areas. Many of the students live in or near brownfield communities in Kansas City, Mo., and western Independence, Mo.
