Your Opinion: Horstmann applies double standards

July 15th, 2011 by Scott Bledsoe, Jefferson City in News

Dear Editor:

I would like to take Mr. Horstmann to task on his double standards in a recent letter.

Mr. Horstmann, you stated that the current administration (meaning the Obama Democrats) has had two years to act on the problems the United States is experiencing, but yet the courage of the newly elected representatives (meaning the Republicans) is still being assessed. You also seem to think that the moment the new administration took office that, poof, the unemployment rate skyrocketed, the recession jumped into gear and America went socialist.

Get a grip on reality, Mr. Horstmann. None of these things happened overnight. It takes several years for the kind of problems we are facing to rise to the current levels. And yes, that means they were growing long before our current president took office, which means they were starting when the Republicans held the White House.

Your assertion that previous administrations had nothing to do with this is at the least a one-sided outlook and, at worst, burying your head in the sand to the facts. And I know what you are going to say. Obama has just made them worse.

Let me ask you this, Mr. Horstmann. When the new Congress was being sworn in two years ago, a number of Republicans came right out on national TV and stated that their prime goal was going to be to make sure that none of the Democrats were going to get bills passed. And just the other day a leading Republican said that the party will not work with the current president. If that is your definition of courage, please feel free to bury your head even deeper.

I am non-partisan and vote for the person I feel is best fitting for the job, no matter what their party, but cannot comfortably stand by and listen to someone who seems to be fairly intelligent deride this great county. While I respect your right to be a staunch Republican, you might want to take a little time to stare into the mirror of life and see the other side of the problems America faces.
