Your Opinion: Don't cut Medicare, Social Security

Dear Editor:

The true colors of our Congress are becoming much more vivid than during the last election. I would venture to guess that most of our state and federal lawmakers were elected because they were pro-life, pro-guns, and hell-bent on reducing the deficit!

However, during all those campaigns, I do not recall these same politicians telling us how they were going to reduce the deficit. It is my opinion that had these politicians been honest and told us that they wanted to reduce the deficit on the backs of the poor, the elderly and the middle class while supporting tax breaks for big corporations and the rich, they would not have been elected.

Our Congress wants to cut the Medicare benefits that most of us have been paying for all of our working lives. In addition, it seems that corporate America is holding the majority of United States citizens hostage. These corporations and their CEOs continue to rake in huge profits and record bonuses at our expense but are not willing to either create more jobs, or keep jobs here in the U.S.

Thanks to a recent Supreme Court ruling, large corporations are allowed to be major contributors to political campaigns thus, pretty much guaranteeing who will be elected. The more money a politician has, the more he/she can bash the opposition and state political intentions that they are not willing to back up with "how" and "when," as in "reduce the deficit."

I urge all readers who are concerned about losing their Medicare benefits to contact their congressmen and congresswomen and ask them not to make cuts to Medicare and Social Security.
