Your Opinion: Empower PSC on rate hikes

Dear Editor:

I read an interesting story regarding a company who supplies some of us our water. Apparently they are emulating another company who wants us to pay for replacements and upgrades. The companies involved are AmerenUe and Missouri American Water.

The cost for Ameren customers will be substantial and the water company is seeking a 23 percent increase. The story said that St. Louis and Charles counties would be affected, however, I believe we here in Jefferson City will ultimately be involved.

They have had increases in 2007, 2008, and 2010. Why aren't they using their profits for these expenses. Oh I forgot, they have their stockholders, bonuses and perks to accommodate first hand.

The Missouri Public Service Commission will hold a hearing regarding this rate increase request, but they leave doubts in my mind as to their validity. Their hearings regarding Ameren's request turned out to be a fiasco. The MPSC finally admitted that the law tied their hands and there was no way they could refuse the increase.

Interesting, to say the least. Why don't our legislators react to this and modify that law and unhandicap the MPSC, or will that affect their campaign donations.

Hopefully my comments give the Missouri citizens some food for thought, and express their displeasure for being treated as a money bank for these large corporations.
