Experts: Precautions may minimize damage from flooding

If you are expecting a substantial amount of floodwater in your area, certain precautions should be taken to minimize damage to your home, appliances and belongings.

For areas where your home might flood, it is important to shut off electrical breakers or unscrew fuses. It is unsafe to work in a flooded area, even if the water is not reaching electrical outlets, because electric motors in appliances such as furnaces, freezers, washers and dryers can cause electric shock.

Sewer backup can occur when large amounts of stormwater enter the sanitary sewer. Plug sewer openings in the basement including floor drains, sinks, showers and toilets to prevent sewer backup from entering your home. However, if your home is expected to experience major flooding, plugs will not be able to stop it.
