During the 1950s, a growing economy fueled many a young person's hopes and dreams for the future. But with the military draft in full force, the possibility of serving in the nation's armed forces remained a somewhat inevitable circumstance.

Born and raised on a farm in rural Moniteau County, Russellville resident Norris Siebert began working at Tambke's Service Station upon his graduation from Russellville High School in 1953.

He later went to work driving a truck on a route delivering milk to locations such as Kraft Foods in California, Mo.

However, in 1958, Siebert received in the mail the fateful letter that has changed many a young man's plans.

"I got the draft notice that said, "You've been selected by your friends and neighbors to represent them in the Armed Forces of the United States,'" Siebert grinned.
