Local veteran worked with missile systems while serving in Army

During the 1950s, a growing economy fueled many a young person's hopes and dreams for the future. But with the military draft in full force, the possibility of serving in the nation's armed forces remained a somewhat inevitable circumstance.

Born and raised on a farm in rural Moniteau County, Russellville resident Norris Siebert began working at Tambke's Service Station upon his graduation from Russellville High School in 1953.

He later went to work driving a truck on a route delivering milk to locations such as Kraft Foods in California, Mo.

However, in 1958, Siebert received in the mail the fateful letter that has changed many a young man's plans.

"I got the draft notice that said, "You've been selected by your friends and neighbors to represent them in the Armed Forces of the United States,'" Siebert grinned.
