Missouri voters could be asked to sign an initiative petition changing how future initiatives are considered in the state.
Missouri allows groups and citizens to get questions on statewide ballots through the initiative petition system. Steps include getting a certain number of registered voters to sign petitions.
The secretary of state's office has given approval for supporters to begin circulating a petition they call The Petition Rights Protection Act. The measure would be placed on the 2012 ballot.
The proposal would make it a crime to forge a signature or intimidate someone signing a petition. Signatures would no longer be thrown out because of mistakes by other people, such as those circulating the petition.
And, it would be easier to change an initiative's ballot title without invalidating its signatures.
