Change sought on St. Louis, KC police

January 25th, 2011 in News

A St. Louis group wants to change the Missouri Constitution to put St. Louis and Kansas City back in charge of their police departments.

The group, called A Safer Missouri, filed a proposed constitutional amendment Monday to let the cities control their police departments under their charters.

The St. Louis and Kansas City departments are now controlled by five-member boards of police commissioners, with four members appointed by the governor.

A Safer Missouri says its amendment would make the cities' police departments more accountable to citizens.

If the secretary of state's office approves the amendment for circulation, supporters will gather signatures trying to get it on the 2012 statewide ballot.
