Your Opinion: Gun control all about control

January 21st, 2011 by Marvin Phillips, Jefferson City in News

Dear Editor:

I share in the grief others have suffered because of recent murders in Central Missouri, as well as in Tucson, Arizona.

Mr. Williams is suffering too but he has let his grief block reality from his desire to rid America of guns. The reality is America is not a free nation without guns. Without the Second Amendment allowing citizens to choose to own guns, this nation could be under the control of a dictator or some other type of government. Only a government that is afraid of its citizens tries to control them. With guns we are citizens. Without them we are subjects, or slaves.

Germany (Hitler) established gun control in 1938 and from 1939-1945, 13 million Jews and others were killed because they could not defend themselves. In China from 1948-1952, over 20 million political dissidents (without guns) were exterminated. In the Soviet Union from 1929-1953 over 20 million people who did not agree with their form of government were killed because they had no guns to defend themselves. I would not like to see history repeat itself here in America, would you?

I read that Switzerland issues a gun to every household with proper training. They have the lowest gun-related crime rate in the world.

Gun control is not about guns, it is about control. You only have the rights you are willing to fight for. I'm fighting for the Second Amendment which means liberty for me. Know guns, know peace and know safety.

Guns don't kill people. People kill people. It has been that way since man was created. You know the story about Cain and Abel from the greatest book ever written - the Bible. Perhaps if people will care for people who show signs of radical behavior, some future tragic murders will be prevented. Instead people don't want to get involved with these radicals, but after a tragic event occurs they say they saw that he wasn't acting sensibly. So now they blame it on the gun, not the person. This is a cop out.

Now that we know radical Islamics are targeting Christians, American citizens more than ever need to be armed with guns to defend themselves. We must be vigilant and ready.

Mr. Williams, I believe you owe me and millions of law abiding gun rights supporters an apology. We do not share in the responsibility of murder because we have not killed anyone today.
