Longtime St. Louis journalist Archibald dies

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Funeral arrangements are pending for longtime St. Louis journalist John J. Archibald.

Relatives told STLtoday.com, the website for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, that Archibald died Monday at St. Mary's Health Center in suburban St. Louis. He was 83 and suffered a stroke about two years ago.

Archibald began a four-decade career at the Post-Dispatch after graduating from the University of Missouri in 1949. Over the years he was a sportswriter, feature writer, even a TV critic.

But he is perhaps best known as the newspaper's bowling columnist. The Professional Bowling Association selected him as a member of its Hall of fame for meritorious service.
