Stouffer to run for Mo. secretary of state

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - Republican state Sen. Bill Stouffer says he will run for Missouri secretary of state next year.

Stouffer is a farmer from the rural central Missouri community of Napton who ran unsuccessfully last year in the Republican primary for the 4th Congressional District. Stouffer says his secretary of state campaign will emphasize efforts to combat potential voter fraud.

Stouffer this year is sponsoring a proposed state constitutional amendment and accompanying legislation that would require voters to prove their identity with government-issued photo identification.

The secretary of state's office is up for election in 2012. The incumbent is Democrat Robin Carnahan.
