Your Opinion: Panel's discourtesy shocks lt. gov.

Dear Editor:

I was shocked at the Missouri Housing Development Commission meeting last Friday by the treatment of Sen. Kurt Schaefer, chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee.

I have been on the MHDC for six years and have never witnessed such discourtesy by some of its members. In just the years I have served on the MHDC, we have allowed developers, construction company owners, labor leaders and other citizens to testify before us. However, last Friday, Gov. Nixon's appointees, voting as a bloc, succeeded in denying Sen. Schaefer the opportunity to speak.

Just weeks ago, MHDC Director Margaret Lineberry testified in front of Sen. Schaefer at an appropriations hearing regarding tax credits for low income housing. It was made clear to the MHDC on Friday that Sen. Schaefer's testimony was regarding the short- and long-term effects of these tax credits on the state budget. Yet, Director Lineberry and the other Nixon appointees refused to let Sen. Schaefer speak.

This stunning and astounding disregard for the Legislature is an act of disrespect for every member of the House and Senate and only causes concern regarding future actions of the MHDC.
