JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon says the state should combine three of its job training programs to improve efficiency.
On Wednesday, Nixon told members of the Missouri Chamber of Commerce that the goals of the separate programs are "disjointed and confusing." He supports a bill from Republican Sen. Eric Schmitt that would combine them as the Compete Missouri Job Training Program, to steer workers toward certain industries.
The governor also says the state should make changes to its tax credit programs for business development. State economic development director David Kerr says the programs could decrease the number of jobs business would have to create to receive benefits. Kerr says that would encourage more small businesses to create jobs in rural areas.
