JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - Both of Missouri's U.S. senators and one of its representatives told business leaders that the government must cut taxes and spending to help stimulate the economy.
Speaking Wednesday to members of the Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill said the U.S. must reform its tax code to remove tax breaks for certain industries. She said that would allow Congress to lower the overall tax rate on businesses.
Republican Sen. Roy Blunt and Republican Rep. Vicky Hartzler both called for tax cuts, saying they would give business owners an incentive to hire workers.
Hartzler also said the House is working to reduce funding for enforcement of certain federal rules affecting businesses. She said those rules make it difficult for businesses to compete with companies in other countries.
