A five-car accident on the northbound Missouri River Bridge backed up Thursday evening rush hour traffic in Jefferson City.

According to police reports, traffic became congested about 4 p.m. for an unknown reason, which caused cars to abruptly slow down.

A car driven by Elizabeth Jones of Jefferson City was following too closely and rear-ended the vehicle in front of her, police said.

Four other cars besides Jones' were damaged as a result of the crash.

The other drivers included Crystal Zacharias of Russellville, Wilyonna Cooper of Columbia, Fredrick Beech of Holts Summit and Bryant Prenger of Holts Summit.

Two of the drivers were treated for moderate injuries.

The bridge was down to two lanes for about 30 minutes while officers cleared the scene and traffic was backed up in all directions.

Officers remind motorists that they should not block intersections when traffic is congested. Vehicles going to the bridge were blocking intersections, which led to other roadways being congested.
