Your Opinion: Response to Horstmann #2

February 16th, 2011 by Edward Meyers, Jefferson City in News

Dear Editor:

This letter is in response to Harold Horstmann's Feb. 8 letter about "common good."

First, I would like to point out that nowhere does Christian teaching include name calling (liberals are socialist/Marxist). The often stated notion in this space that Christians cannot be Democrats or social liberals is simply preposterous. By all indications, Christ himself was a social liberal.

But incredibly astonishing are his statements that "our education system ... (needs) more Christian teaching ... (for the) development of a mature, responsible individual who can successfully support a Christian family."

Now, I am not a constitutional scholar, but in a country where the right to freedom of religion is paramount, Mr. Horstmann's apparent belief that all schools should develop "mature, responsible individual(s) who can successfully support a Christian family," is itself the height of arrogance and ignorance. I am pretty sure this belief would be considered unconstitutional for public schools where all are and should be accepted regardless of race, creed, color or religion. Everyone must have the right to an education free of any religious teaching if they so choose.

Mr. Horstmann, you owe this community, especially non-Christians, an apology. Whether you like it or not, we are all in this together and all must be treated with the respect and dignity to which you refer (though apparently do not practice).

It is sad that we as a people still do not believe in "one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
