Senate perfects MoDOT lawsuits bill

February 9th, 2011 in News

Since 1999, Missouri's Transportation Department has been required to go to binding arbitration if a plaintiff wanted it.

And that's costing Missouri fuels tax payers money, state Sen. Bill Stouffer told colleagues Tuesday morning, before they gave first-round approval to a bill giving MoDOT the choice of arbitration or a court trial.

"Obviously, it depends on the year, but their estimate was it would be a $2 million per-year savings," Stouffer, R-Napton, explained. "Their costs have risen from $4 million in 1999 to $12 million in this past year."
