UMKC's School of Education receives $1.5M gift

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - The University of Missouri-Kansas City has received a $1.5 million gift to expand its focus on urban education.

The money comes from the Sosland Foundation and the Vivian & Hymie J. Sosland Charitable Trust. The Sosland family started Sosland Publishing, a Kansas City-based company focused on the food industry.

Their gift will pay for an endowed chair in urban teacher education. The person picked to fill the role will work closely with the UMKC School of Education's Urban Education Research Center.

The center is scheduled to open in fall 2012 with a focus on research addressing urban schools.
