Recall news: Spinach and cocktail mix

The following recalls have been announced:

FRESH PACKAGED SPINACH

DETAILS: Avon Heights Mushrooms of Avondale, Pa., is recalling some packages of fresh packaged spinach. The brands include Krisp Pak 10-ounce bags, Better Brand 10-ounce bags and Avon Heights packages of 4 2.5-pound bags. The affected spinach has a "best if used by" date of Dec. 16 and the codes DP 340 and T691. Consumers should discard packages with those codes and write to the company address on the package for a refund.

WHY: During routine surveillance sampling, one package of Better Brand 10-ounce spinach tested positive for E. coli. Out of caution, the company is recalling all packages produced on the affected day.

INCIDENTS: No illnesses have been reported in connection with this spinach.

HOW MANY: The company did not say how many packages of spinach may be affected by the recall.

PAT O'BRIEN'S BLOODY MARY COCKTAIL MIX

DETAILS: Sirocco Enterprises Inc. of Jefferson, La., is recalling its 33.8 fluid ounce (1 liter) bottles of Pat O'Brien's Bloody Mary Cocktail Mix because it contains undeclared soy and wheat. The problem was created by a change in an ingredient. Production and distribution of the product has been suspended until the Food and Drug Administration and the company are certain the problem has been corrected. Consumers may return the mix to the place of purchase for a full refund.

WHY: People who have allergies to soy and wheat run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products.

INCIDENTS: No illnesses have been reported in connection with this problem.

HOW MANY: Bottles of the recalled Pat O'Brien's Bloody Mary Cocktail Mix were distributed nationally in retail stores and through Internet sellers.
