A former Missouri Department of Transportation employee has been appointed Jefferson City's new director of public works, effective Jan. 3, 2012.
During a closed session of the City Council on Monday night, Roger Schwartze was approved for the position in a unanimous decision, though 5th Ward Councilman Dave Griffith was not present for the vote.
Schwartze worked for MoDOT for 23 years before retiring last year as district engineer. His appointment will place the current interim public works director, Matt Morasch, back to his position as director of engineering.
The Department of Public Works is the city's largest department and includes public works and planning services.
