Cole County deputies apprehend wounded suspect after chase

A police pursuit ended in Cole County early Saturday with officers taking a wounded male suspect into custody.

Authorities report the 40-year-old man was shot and wounded during a domestic dispute at a residence in the Rocky Mount area that occurred before the chase. The Morgan County Sheriff's Department was called around 3:30 a.m. to the home, where deputies learned that the injured man and a female already had driven away.

Deputies put out a call to stop the man's car. He was driving eastbound on U.S. 54 fleeing from an Eldon police officer at around 3:45 a.m. when Cole County deputies joined the pursuit.

The suspect's car was stopped southwest of Jefferson City on 54 near Route CC after spike strips were deployed, and he was taken into custody pending possible charges connected to the dispute in Morgan County. An ambulance responded to the scene to transport him to a Jefferson City hospital for treatment of his injuries.

The female occupant in the suspect's car also was detained initially. The Morgan County Sheriff's Department says the investigation is ongoing and additional information will be released later.
