I recently had the pleasure of attending a talk at the Missouri River Regional Library by an M.U. professor who had written a book about cemeteries.
Perpetual care was addressed. Some cemeteries have structured their funding so as to ensure, hopefully, perpetual upkeep.
The city cemetery, in the City of Jefferson, is not such an entity. Family members of decedents have moved away. The city has assumed responsibility. While not a neglected cemetery, much more could be done.
Endowments are an interesting concept. Many colleges have endowments. The principal goes untouched. Interest funds special projects.
Could the City of Jefferson create a cemetery endowment? Could a separate entity create such an endowment? How any millions of dollars would be needed?
A brand-new city cemetery committee or board is being created by the city. This is one possibility which they might consider.
I thank the library and the professor for presenting this fine program. Perhaps it might become a springboard for action.
