Missouri Department of Conservation naturalist Trana Madsen wants people to enjoy the more than 100 species of birds visiting the Runge Nature Center in Jefferson City each year. The new Cardinals and Coffee program is designed to do just that.

Thursday's freezing temperatures kept the turnout low, but winter months offer an opportunity to see cold weather birds.

"I need an excuse to get out in the woods," Dora Ransdell said after completing the chilly hike.
