JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - A man on death row for killing two Randolph County jailers in 2000 is asking the Missouri Supreme Court to resentence him to life without parole.
Assistant Public Defender Jeannie Willibey argued Thursday that evidence about Michael Tisius (TIH'-shuhs) pleading no contest in 2009 to possessing a weapon in prison should not have been allowed at his trial.
Assistant Attorney General Richard Starnes said because Tisius admitted guilt, the court was correct to allow the plea as evidence.
Tisius was sentenced to death in the shooting deaths of jailers Jason Acton and Leon Egley. They were killed after Tisius and the girlfriend of inmate Roy Vance unsuccessfully tried to free Vance.
The Columbia Daily Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/tPvcgi) the girlfriend, Tracie Bulington, and Vance are serving life sentences.
