Your Opinion: Flag deserves your attention

Dear Editor:

In a recent News Tribune Dear Abby column the U.S. flag code was printed. I wish to quote it. "Military veterans, as civilians no longer in uniform, may choose to salute the flag with the military "hand to the forehead' as they did while in service. All other persons should face the flag and stand at attention with their right hand over the heart, or if applicable, should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Citizens of other countries should stand at attention. All conduct toward the flag in a moving column should be rendered at the moment the flag passes. This includes the playing of the national anthem."

While saluting in this manner the person should stand at attention. (My addition.)

I cannot tell you how many times I have watched a parade and people just sit or stand and continue talking. I feel we should be proud to be Americans and respect the flag, the United States and the veterans (both present and past) enough to get to our feet and salute it in the proper manner.

I am sure most of the people do not salute just because they aren't sure just how they should salute. Next time there is a parade let's get to our feet and show that respect.
