Kansas City man charged in 1980 homicide

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - More than 30 years after a Kansas City man was shot to death at his home, a man already in prison has been charged in his death.

Prosecutors on Monday charged 56-year-old Terry E. Pettus with second-degree murder in the December 1980 death of Steven R. McAfee.

Prosecutors said that DNA found on a pistol after a 2009 convenience store robbery matched blood found at McAfee's home.

The Kansas City Star reports (http://bit.ly/pTBSHj ) that Pettus is imprisoned in Cameron, Mo., for an eight-year sentence for robbery, resisting arrest and driving with a revoked license.

Court documents indicate that Pettus told police that a friend, Roy Martin, shot McAfee during a robbery attempt at his house. Martin was shot to death inside a car in 1991.
