The musical "Hairspray" features '60s-era singing and dancing.

Tracy Turnblad and her bodacious 'do will grace the stage of Jefferson City's Miller Performing Arts Center in The Little Theatre's rendition of Hairspray on Aug. 25-28.

Revived by the 2007 movie based on a Broadway musical, the original story comes from a 1988 movie by John Waters.

Waters wrote the story as a social commentary on the injustices of 1960s culture out of his experience growing up in Brooklyn during that period. Heavy themes like racism, obesity and social inequality are dealt with in a campy musical style.

Tracy, a "pleasantly plump" teen, dreams of dancing on the popular "Corny Collins Show" - based on Waters' favorite program, the "Buddy Dean Show." When her dreams of dancing on the show come true, the former social outcast now has the popularity and the power to integrate the TV network, defeat the reigning Teen Queen and win the heart of her crush.
