Cole County prisoners finally moved into new jail

With help from Jefferson City police (foreground), the Cole County Sheriff's Department loads the first inmates into a transport van to be taken to the new jail, just a block away. The move of about 100 inmates started around 4:15 p.m. Sunday and was expected last until the early morning hours today.

The new Cole County Jail is now fully operational, with Sunday's move of 103 county prisoners into the $28 million facility for the first time.

In addition to the inmates in the old jail, the county also was moving Cole County prisoners being held in Morgan and Pettis counties, including Alyssa Bustamante, who is being held for first-degree murder and armed criminal action for the killing of 9-year-old Elizabeth Olten in 2009.
