ALTADENA, Calif. (AP) - A hiker died Saturday after falling about 50 feet from a cliff in the Angeles National Forest, authorities said.
A female companion tried to help John Jutiyasantayanon, 23, after he fell around 9:30 a.m. near a waterfall in Eaton Canyon but got stuck, Los Angeles County sheriff's Sgt. Debra Herman said.
Other hikers tried to perform CPR on the Montclair man before rescuers arrived, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
His companion was treated for minor injuries.
Jutiyasantayanon's death was the second recent fatality in the Eaton Canyon area north of Altadena, which sees an influx of visitors this time of year.
On July 31, a hiker fell from a trail near a waterfall in the area and later died at a hospital.
Also this week, a man broke his legs when he fell off a cliff in the same area.
