15,000 households lose power in St. Joseph area

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) - An estimated 15,000 people in the St. Joseph area were without power after mechanical failure at a substation caused a building to catch fire.

Kansas City Power & Light crews were dispatched to the substation Wednesday after the outage at 2 p.m. in parts of St. Joseph and Country Club Village.

A KCP&L spokesman said the company hoped to have power restored by 3 a.m. Thursday. The St. Joseph News-Press (http://bit.ly/qIXZqt ) reports 7,900 customers were still without electricity at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

The Red Cross was opening a shelter at Frederick Boulevard Baptist Church for those affected.
