Scholarship created in honor of retiring principal

A graduating senior who spent his junior high days at Lewis and Clark Middle School will receive a first-time scholarship.

The Dr. Bob Steffes Lewis & Clark Scholarship has been created by the middle school's Parent Teacher Organization.

The two-fold goal of the scholarship is to assist a qualified student in completing requirements for a bachelor's degree and to honor its namesake's tireless leadership, his vision and the impact he has played in educating thousands of local children, said spokesperson Susan Stegeman.

The organization hopes to grant one recipient with a $500 award.

While developing the scholarship, Steffes announced that he would retire as principal. Steffes has served as Lewis and Clark Middle School's principal since it opened 17 years ago.

Applications for the "Dr. Bob Steffes Lewis & Clark Scholarship" and criteria are available at the Jefferson City High School counselor's office. Applications will be accepted through May 1 and should be mailed to Lewis & Clark Middle School attn.: PTO.
