KC copper thieves hit rail cars

April 19th, 2011 in News

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Thieves stole about 3,500 pounds of copper from 10 to 15 rail cars in Kansas City over the weekend.

Police said the thefts will cost the company about $1 million. The loss included the lost copper wiring and extensive damage to the locomotives that will require them to be shipped out of state for repairs.

Police said the thieves apparently drove a heavy-duty truck into the lot and spent hours stripping the engines and loading the copper into the truck.

The Kansas City Star reported that the crime was discovered Monday by workers at Reload Central Inc.
