Jefferson City Symphony Orchestra to perform "The Planets'

Gustav Holst's "The Planets" will open the last concert of the Jefferson City Symphony Orchestra's season at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Lincoln University's Mitchell Auditorium.

"The Planets" is a seven-movement orchestral suite, with each movement named after a planet of the solar system. It premiered at Queen's Hall in 1918.

This Jefferson City Concert Association 2010-11 concert series show also features the annual JCSO Piano Concerto Competition Winner.

Noted for his style of "exquisite beauty" and "crystalline clarity," Tate Addis, the 2011 winner, will perform "Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini" in A-minor Opus 43 by Sergei Rachmaninof.

Addis is an Artist's Certificate candidate at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, studying with Robert Wierich.

The symphony orchestra also will play "Romanian Rhapsody No. 1" by Georges Enesco.

Enescu wrote his first musical composition at age 5 and graduated from the Vienna conservatory by age 12. Many of his works were influenced by Romanian folk music.

The narrator will be Bob Priddy.

The symphony also will pause to recognize the high school seniors who have performed with the ensemble. Two seniors will be honored with the Lawrence Woodman-Robert Mansur Senior Student Service Award and the Ruth Morse Wilson Award.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $8 for students.
