"The Program Era' wins $30,000 Truman Capote award

NEW YORK (AP) - A book tracking the rise of creative writing programs since World War II has won a $30,000 prize.

Mark McGurl's "The Program Era" has received the Truman Capote (kuh-POH'-tee) Award for literary criticism. The prize was announced Wednesday by the University of Iowa Writers' Workshop, one of the country's top writing programs and the administrator of the award.

The Capote award is named for the author of "Breakfast at Tiffany's" and "In Cold Blood." Previous winners of the award include Nobel laureate Seamus Heaney and literary critic Helen Vendler.
