Man charged in attack on girlfriend

A St. Louis man was charged Friday with forcible sodomy and felonious restraint in connection with an attack on his girlfriend in Jefferson City.

According to court records, Gregory Edwards, 51, is believed to have started the attack around 10 p.m. Wednesday in the 900 block of Broadway.

According to a Jefferson City police probable cause statement, Edwards' girlfriend came to an apartment where Edwards was staying. He confronted her, and an altercation ensued.

Edwards struck the victim in the face with a blunt instrument, causing a deep laceration to her left cheek. He also struck her numerous times with his hands and that caused bruising, swelling and two black eyes.

The victim attempted to leave the apartment to get medical treatment, but Edwards restrained her by grabbing her by the hair and pulling her back into the apartment.

Edwards physically assaulted the woman further and displayed a knife, threatening to kill her. Edwards then forced her into a bedroom where he had deviant sexual intercourse with her.

Edwards kept her in the apartment until around 2 p.m. Thursday when she convinced Edwards to allow her to get medical treatment. Edwards did attempt to flee the area by boarding a train, but was picked up by police.

When interviewed by authorities, Edwards said the woman attacked him and that the intercourse was consensual.
