VAN BUREN, Mo. (AP) - Days after the sheriff of Carter County, Mo., was charged with distributing methamphetamine, his former chief deputy is accused of burglary and receiving stolen property.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol says 23-year-old Steffanie Kearbey told authorities she committed the burglary at the request of the former sheriff, Tommy Adams. Kearbey is free on bond. Her home phone has been disconnected and she did not have a listed attorney as of Thursday.
Adams resigned earlier this week following his arrest on Saturday. He is jailed on $250,000 bond in Cape Girardeau County.
Authorities allege Kearbey sold a gun to a confidential informant on Saturday, later admitting it was stolen from the sheriff's department evidence room. The patrol says Kearbey also admitted to burglarizing a home, but said Adams told her to do it.
