VAN BUREN, Mo. (AP) - A southeast Missouri sheriff facing charges of distributing methamphetamine has resigned.
The Poplar Bluff Daily American Republic reports that 31-year-old Tommy Adams resigned Tuesday as Carter County sheriff.
Adams was arrested Saturday by officers with the Missouri State Highway Patrol. He remains jailed on $250,000 cash-only bond at the Cape Girardeau County Jail.
A Van Buren city officer, Rick Stephens, is filling the duties of sheriff in the rural county of about 5,900 residents in the Ozark Foothills region, not far from the Arkansas border.
