The co-chairs of this year's United Way campaign, Debbie Snyder and Bernie Fechtel, were at recipient agency Jefferson City Day Care Center for the announcement that they were named volunteers of the year.

They do not just wear their black and white "LIVE UNITED" T-shirts. They live it.

Both Bernie Fechtel and Debbie Snyder, co-chairs of this year's United Way campaign, have been long-time supporters of the organization and its 25 agencies.

Both have served the United Way in varying capacities, Fechtel, since 2006, and Snyder, since 2000.

Both have been named volunteers of the year and have spent their time not only volunteering for the United Way and its agencies, but for a host of other community groups and organizations.

Through their experience with the group, they have become well-versed in the abilities of each of the agencies' purposes and scope.

"They all have such a great purpose and all fill an unmet need for some portion of your population," Snyder said.

Fechtel added: "These agencies are not there giving a handout, but a hand up, to the countless people and families who utilize them."

When each thinks of the ways the agencies positively affect families in the area, they are touched and driven to do more.

"I know with my kids, how exciting the first day of school was," Fechtel said, speaking of the work of the Dental Eye and Shoe Program. "All the new shoes and nice clothes all the kids had were exciting for each of them - you can see it in the faces as you drive up to drop them off, their faces and passing students' faces.
