Full steam ahead through Mid-Missouri

October 5th, 2010 in News

The world's largest operating steam locomotive, Union Pacific Railroad's Challenger No. 3985, rolled into Jefferson City on Monday afternoon and stopped in the Millbottom to be on display through Tuesday afternoon.

It's on a six-state, 2,200-mile tour from Cheyenne, Wyo., to Gorham, Ill., to celebrate railroad heritage.

In late September, this steam engine pulled a 65-car train weighing more than 6,000 tons and more than 1.15 miles long, the most for a steam locomotive in the 21st century.

Later on in October, the train will make a return trip with a stop in Sedalia to help celebrate the community's sesquicentennial on Sunday.
