Richmond slips past John Burroughs for Class 3 football crown

Colby Bowles threw his third touchdown pass of the game with 16 seconds left as Richmond beat John Burroughs 21-20 in Missouri's Class 3 championship game Friday.

The Spartans (15-0) trailed 17-0 at halftime. But John Burroughs (14-1) managed only three points and 63 yards of total offense in the second half.

Bowles hit Kyle Carroll with a 22-yard touchdown pass eight seconds into the fourth quarter to pull Richmond within six. He then led the Spartans on a 12-play, 70-yard drive capped by a 21-yard scoring pass to Kane Southwick that made it 20-all. Trent Dials' extra point turned out to be the difference.

Sam Van Doren threw for two touchdowns in the first half for the Bombers, giving him 42 for the season.
