Kansas City lighting tradition to mark 81st year

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Chiefs running backs Jamaal Charles and Thomas Jones will help get Kansas City's Country Club Plaza ready for the holidays.

Charles and Jones will flip a switch on Thanksgiving night that turns on more than 250,000 lights outlining buildings in the city's upscale shopping and dining district.

Afterward, there will be fireworks displays above XXI Forever and the InterContinental Hotel. The event also will feature musical and dance performances.

The Plaza lighting tradition began in 1925 with one strand of 16 lights over a single doorway, and the first actual lighting ceremony took place five years later.

Thousands turn out to watch the ceremony every Thanksgiving night. The lights will remain on through Jan. 16.
