DURHAM, N.C. (AP) - Nolan Smith scored 22 points and No. 1 Duke opened its season by beating Princeton 97-60 on Sunday in the first round of the CBE Classic.
Freshman Kyrie Irving had 17 points and Kyle Singler added 16 for the Blue Devils, who shot 55 percent and hit 14 3-pointers.
Opening a season as the top-ranked team for the seventh time, the Blue Devils never trailed and broke it open by outscoring the Tigers 24-11 during the first 8 minutes of the second half. The reigning national champions forced 27 turnovers and turned them into 36 points.
Dan Mavraides scored 16 points to lead the Tigers (1-1), who fell to 1-18 in the series.
The schools met in the first game played at Cameron Indoor Stadium, a 36-27 victory by Duke in 1940.
No. 10 Syracuse 86, Canisius 67
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - Rick Jackson had 17 points and a career-high 13 rebounds and Brandon Triche added 16 points for Syracuse.
It was the 831st career victory for Orange coach Jim Boeheim, moving him past Jim Phelan of Mount St. Mary's into fifth place all-time in Division I victories.
Syracuse (2-0) has beaten Canisius 20 straight times. The Golden Griffins (1-1) are 1-15 against Syracuse when it is ranked, the lone win coming Feb. 25, 1967, in Buffalo.
Scoop Jardine had 13 points and eight assists, C.J. Fair had 11 points, and Kris Joseph 10 for the Orange.
Greg Logins led Canisius with 17 points and Syracuse native Elton Frazier had 16 points and 12 rebounds.
No. 12 Gonzaga 86, IUPUI 56
SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - Steven Gray scored 17 points for Gonzaga in the regional round of the CBE Classic.
Kelly Olynyk tied a career high with 13 points for Gonzaga (2-0). Robert Sacre and Sam Dower scored 11 apiece and freshman Mathis Monninghoff added 10 for the Bulldogs.
Alex Young led IUPUI (0-1) with 16 points, while Leroy Nobles scored 14 and John Ashworth had 10.
Gonzaga led by as many as 32 points and IUPUI didn't make its first field goal until the 10:22 mark of the first half.
It was the second straight game in which Gonzaga played all 12 players. It was their final tuneup before facing No. 25 San Diego State on Tuesday, then No. 3 Kansas State on Nov. 22 and either No. 1 Duke or Marquette on Nov. 23.
No. 14 Purdue 76, Howard 40
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) - E'Twaun Moore scored 16 points for Purdue in its season opener.
Moore had six rebounds and three assists for the Boilermakers (1-0).
JaJuan Johnson, a preseason All-America, added 10 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks for Purdue, which made 13 of 28 3-pointers while Howard played a zone defense.
John Hart and D.J. Byrd both scored 12 points and made 4 of 5 3-pointers as 10 Purdue players scored.
Alphonso Leary led Howard (1-1) with 10 points and nine rebounds. The Boilermakers held the Bison to 24.6 percent shooting.
No. 22 Temple 82, Toledo 49
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Micheal Eric had 14 points and nine rebounds to lead five Temple starters in double figures.
The Owls (2-0) dominated from the opening tip and had little resistance from the undermanned and overwhelmed Rockets. The Owls had five starters scoring in double figures before the midway point of the second half in their first game against Toledo (0-2) since 1986.
Ramone Moore and Lavoy Allen each scored 12 points for Temple, Scootie Randall had 11 and Juan Fernandez 10.
Temple went on early 12-0 and 13-0 runs to take control.
Zach Leahy had 15 points for the Rockets, who lost their 34th straight road game.
