Open burning begins Monday in Jefferson City

Firefighters remain cautious because of long dry spell

Jefferson City residents will be able to do outdoor burning of yard waste beginning Monday. But fire department officials plan to keep on high alert due to the prolonged dry spell the area has experienced.

The open burning of leaves, grass clippings and vegetation grown on property is permitted from Nov. 15 through March 15 during daylight hours only.

"Residents should use caution when burning, and avoid burning on windy days," said Jason Turner, Jefferson City Fire Department spokesman. "Burn in small piles, and always have some means to extinguish fires quickly, if needed. Residents should also remember that all fires must be supervised by an adult who is present during the burning. Burning in a barrel is highly recommended."

Turner said residents are not permitted to burn in the street or curb lines of the street. He also said it's recommended that all fires be in small piles to prevent large amounts of smoke. Residents should burn 10-15 feet from property lines, structures and power lines.
